Understanding the Exam

What is the dMAT?

The Digitaler Mastertest (dMAT) is a standardized, computer-based academic aptitude test administered by g.a.s.t. in Germany.

It evaluates general cognitive capabilities and subject-specific qualifications for selected Master’s degree applicants — primarily from India — applying to German universities. The test is a required component of the APS (Academic Evaluation Centre) certification process.

Unlike traditional exams, the dMAT does not test memorized academic knowledge. Instead, it measures your analytical reasoning, pattern recognition, and logical problem-solving ability through carefully designed cognitive tasks.

Exam Structure

What’s on the dMAT — and how we prepare you

The dMAT consists of two 90-minute modules. The Core Module tests cognitive aptitude through three subtests. Here’s what each covers and exactly what dMAT Prep provides for it.

Core Module

90 minutes — Cognitive aptitude assessment. Three subtests measuring pattern recognition, mathematical reasoning, and logical deduction.

Subject Module

90 minutes — General Academic Module (GAM) or specialized subject tests. Varies by your chosen field of study.

Core Module Subtests

What it tests

Identify patterns in visual series involving shapes, colors, sizes, and rotations across 4×4 grids. Tests your spatial reasoning and pattern recognition ability.

What dMAT Prep provides

  • Algorithmically generated unique figure grids every session
  • Progressive difficulty from simple rotations to complex multi-attribute patterns
  • Visual pattern breakdown explanations after each question
  • Timed practice matching real exam pace

What it tests

Solve logical-mathematical deductive puzzles involving systems of equations with integer variables. Tests your quantitative reasoning and algebraic intuition.

What dMAT Prep provides

  • Thousands of system-of-equation puzzles with varying complexity
  • Step-by-step solution walkthroughs for every problem
  • Adaptive difficulty that matches your improving skill level
  • Speed drills to build mental math fluency

What it tests

Deduce missing letters in 5×5 grids using logical rules — similar to Sudoku but with alphabetic characters. Tests your deductive reasoning and constraint-based thinking.

What dMAT Prep provides

  • Procedurally generated Latin Square puzzles of varying constraint density
  • Difficulty scaling from single-inference to multi-step deduction
  • Highlight-based hints showing logical elimination paths
  • Performance tracking per difficulty tier

No, the dMAT is not a pass/fail test. Your results are presented as a standardized score (ranging from 0 to 200, with a mean of 100) and a percentile rank. While a low score will not cause an APS rejection, individual German universities set their own minimum score or percentile thresholds as admission criteria.
